Golden Syrup

Golden Syrup is apparently a honey-like type of syrup. Anyone ever had it? More info here

Golden syrup is a thick, amber-colored form of inverted sugar syrup, made in the process of refining sugar cane juice into sugar, or by treatment of a sugar solution with acid. It is used in a variety of baking recipes and desserts. It has an appearance and taste similar to honey, and is often used as a substitute for people who cannot eat honey, such as vegans. It can also be used as a substitute for corn syrup.

I've never heard of it, but it sounds promising.

Never heard of it... I'll look for it next time I'm out grocery shopping!

It's made by "Lyon". It use to be called, Lyon's Golden Syrup. It came in cans in the "old" days. I know that because my parents use to like it. It's now sold in jars. The last place I saw it was at Cost Plus in the gourment food section. The Vermont Country Store might carry it too and/or some larger grocerys or specility stores. It's very similier to Karo syrup.

It still comes in cans over here - well, tins with lids that you prise off with a spoon or knife.

It's really good on things like waffles. It can have the same sort of consistency as runny honey, and is as sweet, but doesn't really taste like honey. It's good in its own right though.

I make an instant-diabetes ice-cream sauce to go over vanilla soya ice-cream - 1 spoonful (dessert or tablespoon depending on greed) non-dairy spread, 1 spoonful cocoa powder, 1 spoonful golden syrup. Melt spread in little saucepan, add other ingredients, heat until bubbling, pour over bowl of icecream and eat straight away.

golden syrup is also known as light treacle and sometimes cane syrup. It doesnt taste like honey but does have a distinct flavour of its own that is rich and mellow. Golden syrup played a popular part in british nursery food (golden syrup dumplings, for example) as well as at breakfast (on crumpets, pikelets, english muffins) and is often used in spiced cakes (ie gingerbread), sticky, saucy hot desserts and biscuits/cookies as well as traditional british treacle tarts (being lighter in flavour than treacle). It has a strong flavour, a deep red-gold colour and a very sweet scent that makes the back of your throat tingle. As noted, it makes a particularly good hot fudge sauce as its strong flavour mixes well with chocolate. Like corn syrup, when used in sweets it gives a sticky consistency.
