Are you offended by the term "Breeder" in the name of this forum?
I'm not, but since San brought it up, I thought I'd make a poll.

I'm not offended by the term breeder, but I am offended by people who choose to not have children who act holier-than-thou. Unfortunately I kind of associate the term breeder with these kind of people.

I thought "breeders" was slang for heterosexuals.

I'm not exactly offended, but if I were pregnant I wouldn't want to be called a "breeder." I relate that term to animals in factory farms.
By the way, I am choosing not to have my OWN children, although I might adopt if I feel that I am ready to raise a child.

i actually got the term from EggplantGirl and Sunshine* who affectionately coined the chicago vegan mommas as the "[Vegan] Breeders". It originally was a working title but it stuck.
...and they vegans don't have a sense of humor ![]() *one with a kid and one pending |

Actually, I wish I could take the credit - I don't find it at all offensive and think it's rather catchy - it must have been eggplant girl - my original idea for the forum title was "p's and p's to be" - which as you can see is rather lame in comparison!

Not only am I not offended, I like the term.
![]() I would like it as much or more if I did have kids, too. If it fits and has a good ring to it, it's cool with me. I also like the band. I saw them open for Nirvana back in the rockin' '90s. What a blast that was!

I've heard vegans refer to those of us with children (child in my case) as breeders in a negative manner and that wasn't so much as offensive, as something for me to roll my eyes at. Here, in the context of fabulous vrf, I think it's a cute term

It seems negitive to me, reminding me both of "breeder" animals and those people are vocal about their belief that childbearing is selfish.

I'm not a parent, and I'm not planning on ever being a (biological) parent, but, at the same time, I can see how the term breeder could be pretty offensive to someone. It just seems to imply to me that the entire focus of someone's life would be to have children, not even implying that the person would raise them. It also makes me think of the women assigned to be breeders in the book The Giver. Did anyone ever read that? I think they might have just been given the job of 'mother.' I haven't read the book in years and don't have a copy on hand.
However, if no parents find the term 'breeder' offensive, then I suppose it's fine. |

Considering the parents unanimously agree that it's not offensive, I think we're pretty safe. Apparently, two non-parents are offended for you. I find that really amusing.
Everyone else is cool with it, so I say keep it and be proud!
