BK Veggie Now Has Egg Whites
Quote:
BK Veggie Now Contains Egg Whites
Posted: December 13, 2004
I have been an enthusiastic supporter of the BK Veggie since its launch in March of 2002. Unfortunately, due to a recent reformulation of the product, I can no longer recommend that vegans eat it.
Until now, if ordered without mayonnaise, the BK Veggie was essentially a vegan product. Although the bun contains a speck of dairy products, I judged this issue to be a trivial concern when compared to the enormous significance of having an essentially vegan product sold by one of the world's largest fast food chains. Since new fast food products routinely fail to sell and are pulled from the menu, I believed that this product urgently needed the support of the vegetarian community.
But the inclusion of egg whites "as a key ingredient" in the patty has forced me to withdraw my support from the BK Veggie. I regard eggs as the most suffering intensive of all animal products. And I ask readers of Vegan.com and listeners of my Erik's Diner podcast to help me get the message out that the BK Veggie has been reformulated, and is no longer an essentially vegan product.
Finally, I urge Burger King to move back to its former supplier of BK Veggie patties. And I hope that others in the animal protection community will join me in calling on Burger King to address the situation.

FYI. Personally, I haven't had one since going vegan about a year and a half ago, but now it's definitely not vegan.
