How should authorities react when a resident tries to enter a burning building to save a pet?

sysop - 03:07pm Apr 17, 2003 CST
Metro Police cited Jarrod T. Martin for disorderly conduct and reckless endangerment after Martin entered a burning apartment building on April 16 to throw his dog to safety.
Officials said Martin put firefighters in danger by entering the building, diverted their attention from the blaze, and could have worsened the fire.
Others praised Martin and dubbed him a "hero" for rescuing the dog.
What's your opinion?

I would rather die in the fire trying to rescue my family members, than let there be even a CHANCE that they not get out.

So I think he was doing what he should have done. He's obviously someone who cares about his 'pet' and we need more people like him in a world where companion animals are looked at as commodities to be tossed aside at a whim.

Good for him, just how could this endanger the firefighters they weren 't the ones going in to rescue the dog. I don't understand why they even think of citing him for this, it was his apartment, his dog, his life to risk. He had every right.

I say congrats to him for going to get his dog!

If my house was burning down I wouldn't give up until all my companions were safe and out of there... which could take a couple trips in and out.

people are mean:mad:

I certainly would not leave my house until all my pets were out (okay i lie) if i had any other than gold fish which i wouldn't go back in for:embarr: Only because the smoke would have already killed them and they wouldn't stand and a chance, but also because (i'm not sure how to say this :embarr: ) well i know i shouldn't but i do regard my life higher than that of a gold fish, now if i'd had a fire in my house when i had my birds and rabbit and dogs i would have got them all out:) but i don't know why i dont feel the same about my fish i know to life is higher than another in my mind but i.................. can't explain hope you know what i'm trying to say.

Courage good, suicide bad!
I would have a hard time not trying to rescue my companions and after my hopefully succesfull rescue I would look at the people looking at me crazy and look at them crazy for looking at me crazy but that would drive me crazy so I hope that doesn't happen.
I like toast...and coffee more coffee and something and something

We just had a man die last week trying to rescue his dogs from his burning house. (http://www.daytondailynews.com/localnews/content/localnews/daily/0422fire.html)

Good for him, just how could this endanger the firefighters they weren 't the ones going in to rescue the dog. I don't understand why they even think of citing him for this, it was his apartment, his dog, his life to risk. He had every right.

Breaking the glass door could have caused a backdraft which would have killed the firefighters inside the house.

on a serious not i know being vegan we believe that all animals are equal and we are animals but i do think that i have a slightly more higher value for human life. Thats not to say i wouldn't try to rescue my pets (had i some) i would risk my life but there is such a thing as a suicide mission okay i'm just confused :p

How did I miss this thread before?

Anyhow, I always thought that if my animals were in danger (any danger), I would try and save them no matter what.

I don't have children and am NOT ever having children. My critters ARE my children and I wouldn't dream of not going in to save them at all costs.
