Oh, oh, oh! If it can please, please, please be on Saturday, I'm all over that. Well, probably not ALL over as I'll be pretty beat from work by Friday. But I so need to get away from concrete.
If Saturday doesn't work for everybody else, I totally understand. :bawling:

Saturday for me too, please! I'm dying to go! What about food, are we bringing lunches again? Will I need any money, because I'm broke!
bkatzman said saturday is 75% good for him too.
I'm sure we should Bring lunch. There was some talk of Thai/Dinner in Redding, but we don't know any places in Redding.
Oh yeah, Seitanic, do you know any options in redding?
Otherwise, no money should be required.
BTW, this looks like a full day trip, 9-6 or so.
Quagga, Quagga SO, seitanicvegan, walrusd1978,bkatzman,me = 6
I have room for one more, with a seatbelt anyway.

There is a possibility I might be bringing a guest. I probably won't find out until later on tonight.
We can have them armwrestle for it.

oh, we can obviously take another auto if mine fills up.
I can tow Quagga's Prius, that would suit my sense of irony very well.

The Mexican place in Redding: Burrito Bandito is off of I-5 on the south end of Redding (on the way back to Chico). It's not right on the highway, but it's close and easy to find. It's open until 8:30pm on Saturday. I had an outstanding vegan burrito there.
I could probably fit a smallish person in between seats on the floor, but they might die (easier) if we crashed.
Ok, we'll have to see the final count and work it out.

Sure, I am willing to drive and can take two people (SO and I will ride together). I'll even bring walkie talkies so we can talk to each other from car to car. I think the amount of gas that Grog's car will use would be enough for me to get all the way to Los Angeles and back.
It should be a lovely outing. Don't forget to bring flashlights for the subway tunnel. It gets very dark in there, I understand.
What's the body count up to?

So my friend really wants to go, but he won't find out if he's working or not until tomorrow or Friday. So I won't know if he's going or not until the last minute. Sorry to keep everyone on their toes.
well.....sans you friend and with Emiloid it makes for one full grog mobile.
I think we have to make a contingency plan then, since I don't think we can wait until Friday evening.
How about...
Meet at my place at 9, goto CNF to get lunch foods, or bring your own.
If we have too many people, take Quagga's ride too, if not, take mine.
If I deem your friend annoying you two can ride with Quagga ;)
Outside of that...what's the plan?
Cave, creek, waterfall, bridge, places then hit the burritto bandit on the way back (or byo food)
Bring hiking clothes, water, flashlights, etc.

I think I might have been too hasty about the mileage remark--say my car gets ~43 mpg but only holds four people. And the grog-mobile gets ~15 mpg but holds seven people -- somebody do the math for me. Is the prius still more efficient? What happens if I only have two people in my car? I need some kind of person per mile per gallon measurement...this sounds like a job for Spasticastic.
Anyway, we'll see what happens when we convene at Grog's come Saturday. I am beat from traveling and working this week and am really looking forward to this trip.
I think we ought to shuffle people around though -- so we can all share each other's company.

If your cars are full, the Prius is still more efficient. The SUV doen't hold twice as many people as the Prius, and the Prius gets almost three times the milage as the grog-mobile (with the estimates above). Of course, if the cars aren't both full, it doesn't really matter unless one car's milage increases less with each person added: it's still two cars going the same distance getting an average of 29 miles per gallon.
Of course, spasticastic could probably describe it better... with detailed charts and equations and such.
Also, I might be wrong. :blank:

Also, a full Prius may not still get 43 mpg.
You can put at least seven people in a Prius, come on people! 4 in the back, 3 up front. Africa style!
Different driving styles affect mileage.
Extreme terrain affects mileage.
Wind, etc.
Whatever!! A big point of the above chart is that people mileage increases dramatically by carpooling. Even the grogmobile can get 100 mpg!

Thank you, Spasticastic -- excellent analysis! That's why I was so disappointed when California caved in and opened the carpool lanes to hybrid vehicles (not all, only the the ones with high mpg).
San Francisco has a a 3-person per car regulation for carpool lanes, so it makes me sick to think of a hybrid with just one person in it cruising along.
Anyway, I guess we should try and encourage a few more folks to go on this trip so we can fill up my car, too!

So now I can mention my favorite gas saving technique of all. The technique that puts all others to shame. The technique that makes even grog's Hummer get water-car like mileage. A miracle technique that makes even the smokiest car a gasoline free clean-machine. What can do this, you ask? The best gas saving technique of all, don't go on the trip! Check out these stats, and look at the mileage grog is getting now!!!

Yeah, I've been using my car too much lately and, trust me, I can see it on every bank statement. But you just wait, mister! Once I no longer have to commute to life, I'll be getting that infinity miles per gallon every day of the year! :p

Lao Kitchen: This place is supposed to have outstanding food, but the ambiance is not ultra deluxe. It's the kind of place that the locals go for dinner. (That's what my boss said, anyway.) It is vegetarian friendly, but I couldn't confirm whether or not it's vegan friendly.
Thai Bistro: not an option. The receptionist was downright rude when I asked about vegan options.

As for food afterwards -- we can always bail on Redding food and eat in Chico.

Temperature - Temperature inside the cave remains a cool 46 degrees Fahrenheit year around. Be sure to take a jacket with you.
Safety - Rough floor, watch your step, low ceiling, sturdy shoes advised!

OK, we did it and we even returned to tell the tale! This despite grog's repeated demonstration of "the shark": swerving smoothly back and forth on the (empty) highway while saying "ba-dump... ba-dump..." etc. Very silly! And very nauseating. :blank:
We were a group of six vegans: seitanicvegan, grog, walrusd1978, Emiloid, quagga, and "mr. quagga". (None of the "maybes" could make it.) We had an interesting day. We drove up a road that would have been a semi-shortcut, and a nice drive... but then we had to turn around because of a wildfire. Pshaw! Naturally, we could have made it! Vegans are so constitutionally hearty, what would a little fire do? Omnis just don't understand. Anyway, since we had to turn around, that added about 1.5 hours to our drive, which would have been a drag, but the company was great, so the time just flew by.
As planned, we traveled to a cool volcanic cave, a really beautiful waterfall, and one of the most interesting bridges I've ever seen. We also made a few unplanned stops, including one at a "vista point" that at first seemed to lack any kind of vista. In the evening we searched for a burrito joint that was invisible or something. It must have been, 'cause we never found it. Luckily, most of us were still full from lunch and from the handfulls of blackberries we chowed on near a lake... a lake with invisible bald eagles and semi-visible ospreys. (I was still mostly full, but there's always room for burritos!)
In short, everywhere we went was interesting and beautiful, and we really had a blast! Photo essay coming up, right grog (and other camera-toters)??

Thanks to grog for driving and being our fearless leader, to Emiloid for hanging out when my bum knee kicked in, to walrus1978, quagga and Mr. quagga for constantly making me laugh.

Mr. Quagga and I had a great time yesterday! Aside from the great natural sights (and some unnatural ones), one of my cherished vegan moments was when someone said (after we decided the burrito place was invisible), "Let's go to Applebee's," and everyone in the car started cracking up. *sigh* With any other group of friends, that suggestion would have been taken seriously...
My one regret...That I didn't accompany Grog on his 1.5 mile excursion to the headwaters of the falls. He was gone before I knew it! Perhaps next time...

It was indeed most awesome. My favorite part was the waterfall. Well, the cave adventure was cool too, especially when we took that little detour and went to the back where no one is allowed to go. The "Rodents of Unusal Size" were cool too. I started out pretty tired but after a nap in the car and some hiking I was, well, still tired; but it was a good tired. Chico Vegans are so . Just so you guys know, my invisible friend fell off the cargo bed when we turned around to avoid the fire. I would've said something, but y'all wouldn't have been able to find him anyway. Oh well. What makes the Calatrava Bridge so beautiful and graceful is that it has only one vertical rise -- the "sundial" tower bears the entire weight of the bridge. Even though the bridge touches both banks of the Sacramento River, the weight of the span is supported by the cables that connect to the vertical portion of the bridge. The cables are interesting too -- although they look identical, in fact they vary in thickness depending on the weight that they have to bear.
It truly does function as a sundial, also. There are markers around the perimeter that show 10 am, 11 am noon, and so on. Very cool!
Wow! That's beautiful! It's a work of public art. Thanks for the thorough explanation, quagga.

Bluedawg -- I would love to see that sunscreen move and open. There is a lot to be said for making manmade structures resemble nature--they become gentle and powerful at the same time. I think forms like this can also shape our perceptions and actions -- if we lived in rounded curved structures (like hobbits), would it change the way we think and behave? I think it's possible.
You can see how the principles of the MAM sunscreen were applied to the Sundial bridge. In Redding, the base of the bridge can be rented out for wedding receptions/fundraiser galas, etc. In fact, when we were there someone was hosting a fancy to-do. The base of the tower is some 150 feet or so below the bridge. The party was public and private at the same time.

i'm glad you guys liked the links!
it's wonderful having this structure here. they built the addition to the MAM shortly after i moved back home, and it was a really big deal. i actually live very close to lake michigan (several blocks away), and so anytime i ever go downtown or take the freeway anywhere, i pass the museum. i get to see it a whole lot. it's purty. :)
it looks cool when it's open and when it's closed, and there's also a great view of it if you drive down wisconsin ave. downtown (basically "main street") right toward it (i.e., toward the lake). there's an orange sunburst sculpture at the end of wisconsin ave., on a hill, and then when the brise soleil is open, they line up perfectly. i'll try to find a pic.
*****
i'm having a tough time finding a pic, but here's an example of some of the "turmoil" in town about it. calatrava evidently designed it so that they would line up and could be viewed this way, but some people think the orange sunburst is ugly, and they think it "blocks" the MAM.
Q: Jim of Milwaukee - What can be done to have the orange sunburst that blocks the view of the magnificant Calatrava from Wisconsin Avenue moved to a new location? Destroyed, melted and/or sold would be my preference but I guess some people mistakenly think it is creative - so I can live with just moving it - maybe to the Summerfest grounds?
A: Whitney Gould - Sorry, Jim, but while I know lots of people agree with you, I'm for leaving Mark di Suvero's sunburst, "The Calling," right where it is. I think its muscular exuberance is a nice counterpoint to Calatrava's lyrical brise soleil, and the pairing of the two of them reflects the complexity and contradictions of urban life. The museum, which owns the sculpture, has considered moving it, but only with the artist's permission, and as far as I know he hasn't consented.

08-29-2005, 07:08 PM
eh. i don't like these, because they're all too close or off-center or whatever, but you'll get the drift.
as you're driving down wisconsin ave., the sunburst actually looks a lot smaller and the center lines of each piece line up really nicely. these are taken from too close, so the sunburst looks huge.
sunburst is ugly. Looks like orange iron girders in a crossed pattern, woopty doo.

sunburst is ugly. Looks like orange iron girders in a crossed patternI agree completely; that's exactly my impression! I would never have pegged it as a sunburst if you hadn't told me. It looks like a 3D asterisk, if you ask me.

It's leftover construction materials made to look like they came straight out of The Jetsons. I think it was meant to be art.

The subway cave was formed from an old lava flow.
You can see the rubble from the collapsed magma.
c'mon say it with me...mothy mothy mothy mothy mothy mothy
The Roof, The Roof, The Roof was on fire (once)
Or a lava cow-pie as Walrusd1978 put it
Ancient Air Force Motto: Roots From Above!
We took a detour and checked out the beautiful Pit River, which is very cold.
edited by Emioid to add: I could be wrong, but isn't this Hat Creek?
Caught in the act, at Burney Falls lunch area
I guess a cloud passed over
They're lumberjacks and its ok...
I had to scrabble down the cliff off trail to get this shot.
This same pair got lost in the cave that didn't have any branches in it.
Everyone ditched me so I went to find the headwaters by myself. The falls are fed entirely by springs and groundwater/pressure.
Or is it Sweaty/Unshaven/Tired, I forget the lyrics
Off the side of 299 on the way down the mountain. Mr. Quagga was quite excited about this fixer-upper.

I just realized that Calatrava is the architect who is designing the new PATH train station at Ground Zero. Here are some sketches of what it's supposed to look like, subject to change:
1. Aerial view, from downtown
2. Night view
3. View from the south
4. Interior, with roof closed
5. Interior, with roof open
Great article on Calatrava:
