When I was in Texas a couple years ago, they called everything Coke. They were like, "Do you want a coke? what kind of coke do you want?" ... I kept snapping. "I don't want COKE. I want a PEPSI, DAMNIT." lmao.
POP. POP POP POP POP POP. None of this "soda" stuff. Jeebies!

I agree on the "no thanks."
Funnily enough though, growing up in Ohio, I've always called it pop. But when I came to Chicagoland, it's now "soda." I resisted this change with all my heart, but I was worn down over the past 4 years. :)

I'm in an odd sort of place as the whole soda vs. pop debate is concerned. You see, Indiana is sort of split, with the northerners calling the stuff 'pop' and the southerners 'soda' or *cringe* 'sody'. I am from way down on the Ohio River (see red star). Muncie (blue square), I believe, is far enough north to be 'pop' country.

My truly southern relatives call the stuff 'cola'. I believe they think it makes 'em sound proper. :):):)

I think that what we've learned from this little poll is that Canadians stand united on the front..with one voice, we proudly proclaim, "We drink organic POP!"
but..tsk, tsk.. my dear southern friends and neighbours, you've got some serious comunicating to do with your fellow countrymen..just LOOK at the regional divsions this argument is causing your proud nation!
in other words.. what's with the split, yo? I was in Moscow, Idaho and ordered a 'pop' quicly correcting myself with 'soda', and the server assured me not to worry.."I'm from California." :umm: :D

I'm so conflicted!!!
Grew up calling it "pop" (most of my family still does), lived in the South for a while where it was all "CoCola" (in many different flavors), but in my old age I have settled on "soda" for some reason (probably the heavy mockery that "pop" garnered...). Hmmm.

heehee! I remember my grandma being simultaneously amused and scandalized that in Germany (my dad was stationed there when I was a kid, and the grandparents were visiting for the birth of my sister) they just say "toilet" and not some euphemism. ("Warsh-room" as Grandma would say... ) Also she managed to confuse a nurse at the German hospital where my Mom & Sister were by asking "Where are your rest-rooms?" The poor woman said, "Umm... all of our rooms are for resting? Who are you looking for?" and then laughed when she realized what the deal was. :silly:

yeah my mum has great fun laughing at her friend (from texas) when she comes over to visit...she always says she is going to the bathroom or restroom...my mum asks if she is going for a shower, having a rest or going to the actual toilet. (well actually she says 'going to the loo' :p )

wow...i only got 3/10 on the carbonated beverage quiz.
but that doesn't matter because my Canadian bretheren and I stand firm; POP!
Admittedly I have called it soda occasionally - just to try it on for size. But never have i ever heard anyone else (younger than 65) call it soda or soda pop for that matter.
I kinda like 'fizzy drinks'. Thats a cool name. Anyway...I have decided that along with my latest feat in converting to veganism I would give up these fizzy drinks - at least the regular consumption of them. Too unhealthy. :(

I say pop. I always thought "pop" was a midwestern term. Are all you chicagoans who say soda originally from here? Maybe its something in the Lake Michigan water. I'll never forget in that Super Size Me movie when that guy who was getting gastric bypass called it soda water. That really disgusted me for some reason.
I thought Chicago was the midwest. Everything between the coasts is the midwest, right?

In Alabama, everything is Coke. What kind of Coke do you want? is what I always hear. I can't drink anything carbonated though, it makes me puke. That's another story. My stepmom is from Canton, Ohio and she calls it "pop". We make fun of her endlessly for it too, in the same way that she calls vacuuming "sweeping the carpet" and calls the cabinets "cubboards". She drinks her tea unsweetened too, which is like the weirdest thing I've ever heard of.

Decorative crockery and bibelots in vitré armoire or vitrina
A cupboard is a type of cabinet, often made of wood, used indoors to store household objects such as food and crockery, and protect them from dust.
As the name suggests, this piece of furniture was originally a simple board or table on which to place cups or mugs - recorded use of such a name dates back to at least the Middle Ages. For the last few centuries, "cupboard" has referred to a storage area enclosed by doors. The word armoire typically refers to any tall, standalone, often ornated cupboard.
The storage of foodstuffs in cupboards was a major advance in public health as it protected foods from insects and vermin. Furthermore, in hot countries the temperature inside a cupboard is likely to be cooler than outside. This, and the dark interior, will preserve food longer than if it were stored outside.

I voted Coke because I'm from Atlanta, where Coke originated and most folks here call it Coke, not soda or pop(those are thought of as yankee words by the ol' timers).
Anyway, the sad part about Coke, besides it's loaded with sugar and so bad for you, is that Coke outsources animal experimentation. So, if I were going to have an unhealthy coke before I found out they conduct animal experiments, I definately will never have one now that I know. I would like to know if Pepsi test also, they probably do. I don't drink any brand of soda anyway so I don't have to worry about who test and who doesn't.

Pop = any carbonated beverage
Soda = any carbonated beverage when attempting to avoid confusion while ordering in an American restaurant.
Cola = Any dark brown pop that has that flavour that I can't really compare to anything. But, like, coca cola. Pepsi. RC cola. I never say "cola pop" though, but I might say "cola flavoured pop". But usually just "cola" or "pop".

I once worked with a girl (from Minnesota, I think), she kept mentioning POP. I could not figure out what she was talking about, until she pulled out a can of Cola. I proceeded to use the term "Coke", she could not believe that people on the east coast called it that. We back & forth on it for a while. Around here in Baltimore, if it is carbonated then it is referred to as "a coke" (but with different flavors to chose from).

I use the terms pop or soda interchangably. I drink my tea unsweetened, but I have yet to find an iced tea that I like. So it is usually green tea or Twinings breakfast tea in the morning. White tea at lunch. Herbal tea after dinner. Pop or water when it is hot out.

I call it soda. I went to MI for a summer camp when I was little, and on the way to the camp the people who picked us up stopped off at a fast food place. They asked "and would you like some pop?" It was ten o'clock and still light out so I was already sort of thrown and I was like "do I want some what now?" That was my first experience with pop.
I might as well call it coke since they all taste the same to me. To me the categories are "white soda" and "brown soda"
