View Full Version : Angelsu71's Vegetarian-Vegan story

I’ve always been a huge animal lover,( a very rare thing in Newcastle Upon Tyne....home of the macho Geordie! ) but I didn’t turn Vegetarian until I was 16.
My family always had the usual roast on a Sunday, and there was always some form of dead animal involved in almost every meal. One day my sister decided she wanted to be Vegetarian, so on the Sunday she would eat her lunch in her bedroom. After a few weeks of this, I had been thinking more and more about joining her and turn Vegetarian.
So every Sunday, while the family had the usual meal, my sis and I would have our lunch in her bedroom. We would stay there until they had finished whatever animal they had that day, then we would go downstairs once they were done.
This went on for a year or so, and we learnt more and more about the non vegetarian ingredients in the things we ate.

For the next 13 years I was vegetarian, but for long time I had wanted to go Vegan. I didn’t know that much about it, and I guess that’s what held me back ( Yeah, I thought vegans only ate Lettuce and Lentils...I’ll admit that!). I didn’t eat that much dairy anyway, so I thought it would be pretty easy to go all the way.
I only ate dairy to please the family, as they thought I wouldn’t get enough protein and other things. ( Ignorance is bliss I guess! )

Then almost 2 years ago ( July 9th ) I decided to try being Vegan just for 3 days I said. Now, it’s almost 2 years later and I’ve never been happier in my mind, knowing that I don’t eat any of the animals we have in this world.
One of the best things that happened to me when I changed to Vegan was joining the old VMB. That’s where I found a group of fellow vegans...all friendly, and there was always someone with an answer to any question that anyone asked.....but best of all...That’s where I met AdiaStar. :)

Well, That’s my story!

Wow, most parents would have a fit if their children sat in their rooms during meals! What was their reaction?

At the time when we did this, our mother had died the year before, and our dad was ok with it. He didn't really mind, as long as we were eating something.

I am sorry about your mom. That's pretty cool that your dad let you make that decision and that you had a sister to become vegetarian with.

Wow eating in the next room does seem like a big statement. Nice that you and your sister had each other especially in those trying times i bet. It's awesome that the VMB had such a great impact and that you met AdiaStar. WOW!
Yay!:D
I hope this site can do the same for others.

Thanks Blue :D

It was very hard all those years ago to be a Vegetarian in Newcastle. You were looked upon as being a freak if you didn't eat meat!....Guess nothing much has change these days huh?.

Yeah, joining the old VMB changed my life in a great way. AdiaStar is a wonderful person......Angelus71  AdiaStar :)

yeh, to be veggie in the north, although easier these days, was hard back then (studiously avoids dropping into the four yorkshire men sketch.... :D ) i come from wigan and purple and i will be visiting family there this weekend. vegetarianism has arrived but veganism........ :umm: we went round a supermarket there on our last visit purchasing most of our groceries in the aisle labelled "foreign food"!?

manchester is cool though. i'll do a thread in the local forum if someone does not beat me to it.

It's a lot better up here now. I have a good few stores I can get lots of vegan food and things from.....although.....I'm still seen as a freak for not eating meat.

LOL!!! Sounds about like MY sister! :)

I don't know... on the one hand, I want to encourage the formation of another Buffy fan, but on the other... I know if *I* were going to England to visit my Long-Distance Sweetie, I'd have better things to do with my time than watch DVDs! ;) (Hey-- maybe you can combine all your fun activities? Ya know, positive reinforcement can work wonders... you just need to pair the Conditioned Stimulus (Buffy) with a highly rewarding Unconditioned Stimulus (I'll let you work that one out yourselves...)) Good luck, Angelus!
