I have to share my pride! My son, who is six (and vegan), is kicking some major butt in kung fu. He has been taking lessons since late spring. Last weekend he participated in his first tournament and took home a first place trophy in Junior Pee Wee Forms.
This weekend he is taking his Orange Belt test. I will let you all know how he does.
Who says vegan athletes are wimpy :D

Wow! Awsome, gladcow! Gosh, even I feel proud, and I have nothing to do with his success. :p Hello to your family.... :)

Thanks, Em. Hello to you, too!
I am proud to announce that my fabulous son has passed his Orange Belt test and is now officially in possession of his Orange Belt! :D
His Master said if he works very hard he could be a Purple Belt by Christmas.
I am in awe of the boy.

belts? Kung Fu? There aren't belts in Kung Fu. What form is your child studying, exactly?

He's actually studying American Shao-Lin Kempo. It's easier to just say Kung Fu, cos no one knows what Kempo is ;)

Ah, Kempo. That makes more sense. Good style. I'm glad you aren't contributing to the awful Tae Kwon Do plague that has swept the nation. The style I studied is similar, in that they are both Okinawan styles brought from Shaolin (Shorin-Ji-Ryu).
Orange belt, is that the first promotion over white belt in that style? Best of luck on his test. Promotions can be very exciting, not to mention a great source of pride and honor.

My husband is thinking of joining the school, also. I may even be persuaded to do it, too. :D I am very impressed with his school and their attitude about self defense. I am glad to have my son involved with the program. He has blossomed and is doing very well. A friend of mine read that boys need structure (outside of family) during their devolpment and that's why boys join gangs, etc. Hearing that reinforced my decision to enroll him. :)
Belt ranks are as follows
White
Yellow
Orange
Purple (can wear black gi)
Blue
Green
Green Stripe
Brown
Brown Stripe
Black
My son is an orange belt and may be a purple belt by Christmas if he keeps up his hard work! His master is an 8th degree black belt. His teacher is a 4th degree black belt.
Thanks for the interest, Wonko :D
