Every time I go to Geography Lecture and Lab lately, all I can think of is this Hawaiian song. Can't remember who or the the name. The chorus goes:
"On the island, we do it island style.
From the mountain to the ocean
From the windward to the leeward side"

We've been talking about windward/leeward stuff in Geog. Makes me smile at least, and I only have it one day per week.

Since unwrapping this shiny new CD (a rarity for me) I have had this song on repeat & been singing it like mad (despite the fact that I don't actually speak Gaelic):
Oro, Se Do Bheatha 'Bhaile
off Sinead O'Connor's new album, Sean-Nos Nua
It's a welcome-home song for a woman warrior whose fleet successfully defended the Irish coast!

(Delirium, you must acquire this at all costs! :) )

My song of the week is meat is still murder by Propagandhi. It's pretty punk, but if you read the lyrics it's pretty good. I like all of their music, but they are the only punk I really like. Mostly 60's-70's rock for me (thanks mum).

I haven't thought about the Cowboy Junkies in quite a while. I love their "Misguided Angel".

Chris Whitley does a sweet cover of this song on a album by the same name. As well as Bob Dylan's "Spanish Harlem Incident".

Yay! I think my favorites are "Mining for Gold" (neighbors probably very tired of my Shower Rendition of that...) and "To Live is to Fly". :)

I've kicked the Gaelic habit temporarily, but am in a less than chipper mood today due to my favorite puppy at work being diagnosed w/ diabetes ( :o  ) and myself being diagnosed with a HORRIBLE new haircut. Therefore, my song choice: Understanding in a Car Crash, by Thursday. A bit of Billy Bragg sanity

Ideology

When one voice rules the nation
Just because he's top of the pile
It doesn't mean his vision is the clearest
The voices of the people are falling on deaf ears
Our politicians all become careerists.
They must declare their interests, but not their company cars
Is there more to a seat in Parliament
Than sitting on your arse?

And the best of all this bad bunch are shouting to be heard
Above the sound of ideologies clashing

Outside, the patient millions who put them into power
Expect a little more back for their taxes
Like schoolbooks, beds in hospitals
And peace in our bloody time
All we get is old men grinding axes
Who built their private fortunes on the things they can rely
The courts, the secret handshake, the stock exchange and the old school tie
For God and Queen and Country

All things they justify
Above the sound of ideologies clashing

God bless the Civil Service
The nation's saving grace
While we expect democracy
They're laughing in our face
And although our cries get louder

The laughter gets louder still
Above the sound of ideologies clashing

melanie safka is a beautiful folk singer :)

http://www.t0.or.at/~ivi/lyrics/melanie.htm

"I wrote this song in Columbus, Missouri.
I was... had a day off, so I, I wanted to go to the country,
and that wasn't very difficult because the country was...
Columbus, Missouri is the country.
And I walked outside my door and I saw a big cow and I said,
"Oh, moo, you know, don't you, you know that I don't eat cows?"
And the cow didn't say anything except: "Mmmm, Melanie".
And so, and so I wrote him this song,
and I wrote it really for all the cows."

Remember the summer time we were swinging
On the front porch out in the rain
It was Sunday you were all dressed up again
Then we made out under the window pain

And I can still see your dad
Running after me with a shovel in his hand
I don't remember much after that
La la la la, la la la la, Oh oh oh oh...
La la la la, la la la la, Oh oh oh oh...

Remember on Christmas Eve you were crying
I guess you didn't really like the gifts
Porno DVDs and see thru under wear
I should have saved all that for your sis

And I can still see your dad
Running after me with a shovel in his hand
I don't remember much after that
La la la la, la la la la, Oh oh oh oh...
La la la la, la la la la, Oh oh oh oh...

So I guess I'll just run away, run away, run away
He's starting to catch up
Run away, run away
I think I might throw up
Run away, run away

And I can still see your dad
Running after me with a shovel in his hand
I don't remember much after that
La la la la, la la la la, Oh oh oh oh...
La la la la, la la la la, Oh oh oh oh...

"i just don't know what to do with myself" - written by hal david/burt bacharach -- covered by elvis costello and also the white stripes

lyrics:

I just don't know what to do with myself
Don't know just what to do with myself
I'm so used to doing everything with you
Planning everything for two
And now that we're through

I just don't know what to do with my time
I'm so lonesome for you, it's a crime
Going to a movie only makes me sad
Parties make me feel as bad
When I'm not with you, I just don't know what to do

Like a summer rose needs the sun and rain
I need your sweet love to beat all the pain

I just don't know what to do with myself
I just don't know what to do with myself
Baby, if your new love ever turns you down
Come back, I will be around
Just waiting for you, I just know what else to do

"awkward age" - joe jackson

lyrics:

I should have known you were only just fifteen
You had a scowl like a Klingon beauty queen
Old enough to stand out but too young to stand with pride
So uncomfortable in your messed-up skin
And the cool parties never let you in
I can still relate to being left so high and dry
Don’t cry
You’re just at an awkward age

We’ll all be fine
Disgraceful under pressure
Don’t tow the line
You’re just at an awkward age
Don’t cry - you’re just at an awkward age
Don’t cry
You’re just at an awkward...

You look at me like I know what’s going on
I’m looking back and I wonder what went wrong
I really thought by now a few things might just clarify
I got a mind that goes out to lunch for days
And a body that sometimes disobeys
I get into the parties but I hate them 'cause I'm shy
Oh my
I’m still at an awkward age

We’ll all be fine
Disgraceful under pressure
Don’t tow the line
You’re just at an awkward age
Don’t cry - you’re just at an awkward age
Don’t cry
You’re just at an awkward...

We’re supposed to be happy
Supposed to be tough
Supposed to be flawless
And buy the right stuff
They want us all swimming
Don’t care if we drown
So don’t let them take you down
It’s a scary mountain to climb up without a guide
Besides...
We live in an awkward age

We’ll all be fine
Disgraceful under pressure
Don’t tow the line
You’re just at an awkward age
Don’t cry - you’re just at an awkward age
Don’t cry
You’re just at an awkward...

"Henry Lee" by Nick Cave with PJ Harvey........I've been on a bit of a Nick Cave kick the past few days and I can't get this song out of my head. It's one of my favorites - beautiful and haunting and PJ Harvey's voice sounds amazing on it.

Get down, get down, little Henry Lee
And stay all night with me
You won't find a girl in this damn world
That will compare with me
And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee
I can't get down and I won't get down
And stay all night with thee
For the girl I have in that merry green land
I love far better than thee
And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee
She leaned herself against a fence
Just for a kiss or two
And with a little pen-knife held in her hand
She plugged him through and through
And the wind did roar and the wind did moan
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee
Come take him by his lilly-white hands
Come take him by his feet
And throw him in this deep deep well
Which is more than one hundred feet
And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee
Lie there, lie there, little Henry Lee
Till the flesh drops from your bones
For the girl you have in that merry green land
Can wait forever for you to come home
And the wind did howl and the wind did moan
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

Robin Williams. From Fern Gully. :) Extended.

yo the name is Batty
the logic is erratic
potato in a jacket
toys in the attic
I rock and I ramble
my brain is scrambled
I rap like an animal
but I'm a mammal
(all of our cosmetics are non carcinogenic)
I've been brain fried
electrified
infected and injectified
vivisectified
and fed pesticide
my face is all cut up
cos my radar's all shut up
nurse, I need a check up from the neck up
I'm Batty
(it seems to have no effect, doctor)
(get me another one, get me another animal!)
(aaa!)
they used and abused me
battered and bruised me
red wires, green wires
stuck 'em right through me
so hear my batty words
and exercize a little pruse
when dealing with
humans
(phone call, mister darwin, phone call)
(all the other students...)
(scalpel, more nitrous oxide)
(the eye make up, when inserted rectally, has some effect)
(remove the brain pan..)
(we noticed, when dipping the bat in a series of..)
(after 600 packs of cigarettes, the animal seem to exhibit some..)
(I said orally)
(Insert the elec- just do it!)
(we're losing him!)
(it seems to have no effect, doctor)
(whe- get me another one, get me another ANIMAL!)
(look professor they dance up and down just like Elvis!)
(fine, if you can just put it - strap him down, if he moves - medicate him - medicate him! - MEDICATE HIM! - MEDICATE MEEE!!!)
(it seems to have no effect, doctor)
(thank you nurse)
(why don't you ever call me?)
(as you see, the animals don't really feel pain - THEY JUST GET USED TO IT!)
cos I'm a real fruit bat and I'm ready to rap
I'm ready to snap
I suffer from sciatica and chapped lips
and jock itch!
like a rocket in my pocket and I NEED to scratch
but now I can't stop it!
I'm Batty (Batty Batty)
I'm Batty (Batty Batty)
I'm a real fruit bat and my logic is erratic
I'm Batty (Batty Batty)
I'm Batty (Batty Batty)
it's my batty rap
(shave his head you idiot!)
if you could just take a little off the side
my batty rap
(who's Batty?)

sigh...Right now I'm listening to a song titled "Estrella" by my favorite band, Cinerama - and this song is literally making me sick to my stomach. The lyrics are paint a painfully accurate portrait of my relationship history. It's about a man who is very frustrated, because he's screwing around on his woman, and she keeps believing his lies, because she's so incredibly trusting that she would never suspect that he wouldn't be telling her the truth.

Just reminds me that as much as I try to believe that my innocence is a good thing, I really should get it through my head that not everyone is as honest as I.

I probably just gave you guys way too much information about myself, but I'm just so touched by this song. I just wish it didn't make me feel so sad.....

"You've never found out if I sleep around
But that's because you haven't even tried to.
You don't even know when you're being lied to.

I can't believe you don't suspect some slight adultery.
You must see that you're much too good for me.

Because believe me, you should leave me.
You're making it too hard
How can you disregard
What I'm doing, who I'm pursuing?
I don't know what you want me to do
But I am not the man for you"

I'm beginning to think maybe one of my ex-boyfriends actually wrote this song and sold it to Cinerama's frontman, David Gedge.

My song of the day is:

Strobe Light

Where's my telephone?

"Is that you baby?"
"Yeah."

"Got something to tell you."
"Oh, what?"

I want to see you tonight
I want you to walk in the door
I want you to lay on the floor
Cause tonight's the night
We make love, under a stobe light
Underneath the strobe light

Chorus:
Wanna make love to you under the strobe light
Wanna make love to you under the strobe light
Strobe light - Woah oh oh
Strobe light - Woah oh oh

Yeah!

But the light goes to my head!
Everything I see is red

Baby when I kiss your hair
I feel electricity in the air

I'm gonna kiss your eyes
Then I'm gonna kiss your neck
Then I'm gonna kiss your tummy
The I'm gonna kiss your pineapple

Tonight's the night
For love under the light
Strobe light, strobe light
Underneath the strobe light

(chorus)

Yeah!

I just wanna make love to you
I just wanna make love to you
Underneath the strobe light

Strobe light, strobe light
Strobe light, strobe light
Strobe light
Strobe, strobe, strobe, strobe, strobe light

Oh my gawd! I bought Weird Al's new CD titled POODLE HAT today. It's hilarious! I've about peed myself listening to the "eBay" song. It's too funny!! If you don't do eBay you might not find it funny, but any eBayer will love it!

eBay by Weird Al (http://www.com-www.com/weirdal/ebay-html.html)

Lyrics:

Yeah
A used ... pink bathrobe
A rare ... mint snowglobe
A Smurf ... TV tray
I bought on eBay

My house ... is filled with this crap
Shows up in bubble wrap
Most every day
What I bought on eBay

Tell me why (I need another pet rock)
Tell me why (I got that Alf alarm clock)
Tell me why (I bid on Shatner's old toupee)
They had it on eBay

I'll buy ... your knick-knack
Just check ... my feedback
"A++!" they all say
They love me on eBay

Gonna buy (a slightly-damaged golf bag)
Gonna buy (some Beanie Babies, new with tag)
(From some guy) I've never met in Norway
Found him on eBay

I am the type who is liable to snipe you
With two seconds left to go, whoa
Got Paypal or Visa, what ever'll please
As long as I've got the dough

I'll buy ... your tchotchkes
Sell me ... your watch, please
I'll buy (I'll buy, I'll buy, I'll buy ...)
I'm highest bidder now

(Junk keeps arriving in the mail)
(From that worldwide garage sale) (Dukes Of Hazzard ashtray)
(Hey! A Dukes Of Hazzard ashtray)
Oh yeah ... (I bought it on eBay)

Wanna buy (a PacMan Fever lunchbox)
Wanna buy (a case on vintage tube socks)
Wanna buy (a Kleenex used by Dr. Dre, Dr. Dre)
(Found it on eBay)

Wanna buy (that Farrah Fawcett poster)
(Pez dispensers and a toaster)
(Don't know why ... the kind of stuff you'd throw away)
(I'll buy on eBay)

What I bought on eBay-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y

And for my song of the day it was "Wise Up Sucker" by Pop Will Eat Itself.

'mouthful of shit' by chumbawamba - mainly because i spent today in the waiting room of the housing benefit office ( info for the non-british out there! - the organisation which is meant to give you money to pay your rent when you are unemployed)
i have waited four months for them to give me any money - they owe me £1100 - ahhh its all so evil and my landlord is not pleased! so the above tune says it all perfectly!

"Crazy-Maker (I'm Still In Love With Your Eyes)" by Versus

a very sad song about holding out for the wrong person for the wrong reasons

"I've been living in the space between your moles, gliding like a spider over lies you told."

This song used to really get to me because I used to have such a difficult time with breakups. Thank God that's not the case anymore.

new mix CD! YAY! :D
the 2 I most can't get out of my head:

"The District Sleeps Alone" by The Postal Service

...seems so out of context
in this gaudy apartment complex;
a stranger with your doorkey,
explaining that I'm just visiting.
And I am finally seeing
why I was the one worth leaving,
I was the one worth leaving...
:brokenheart: :brokenheart: :brokenheart:

and, in sharp contrast, funnily enough:

"If I Can't" by 50 cent!!! :p

...hit the clutch, hit the gear, hit the gas, and I'm gone!
If I can't do it, well, Homie, it can't be done!!!...
 :silly:

I'm sorry! I feel your pain. When I worked at Disney (boo hiss, I know), every three months they sent us a disk with 12 songs that were played over and over and over again. I suspected brainwashing of some sort... but yeah, it totally drove me insane.

The Fight Song - Marilyn Manson

Nothing suffocates you more than
the passing of everyday human events
Isolation is the oxygen mask you make
your children breath into survive

But I'm not a slave to a god
that doesn't exist
But I'm not a slave to world
that doesn't give a shit

And when we were good
you just closed you eyes
So when we are bad
we're going to scar your minds

fight, fight, fight, fight

You'll never grow up to be a big-
rock-star-celebrated-victim-of-your-fame
They'll just cut our wrists like
cheap coupons and say that death
was on sale today

And when we were good
you just closed you eyes
So when we are bad
we're scar your minds

But I'm not a slave to a god
that doesn't exist
But I'm not a slave to world
that doesn't give a shit

the death of one is a tragedy
the death of one is a tragedy
the death of one is a tragedy
but death of a million is just a statistic

fight, fight, fight, fight
