I had a conversation with some people at a party last night about the most annoying song ever. A friend mentioned a piece he heard on NPR about "ear wigs", songs that you hear and can't get out of your head. They even listed the top five ear wigs of all time. Number one - "It's A Small World." But the number two song, which I actually like, has been in my head all morning. Just from hearing someone mention the title!
"Come On Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners
I think I am one of the few people that absolutely despise "Come On, Eilene." I don't know why but that song gets on my nerves. And now it's in my head. Maybe that's why.

When I'm Cleaning Windows, by George Formby.
If you read between the lines you'll notice that it is a scholarly insight into the vagaries of human existence, with a veiled reference to philosophical concepts of love and emotion.

Yes I think that it is such a good song we should all sing along
When I'm Cleaning Windows
George Formby
- written by George Formby, Harry Gifford and Frederick E. Cliffe
- as recorded September 27, 1936 by George Formby (1904-1961)
Now I go cleanin' windows to earn an honest bob
For a nosy parker it's an interestin' job
Now it's a job that just suits me
A window cleaner you would be
If you can see what I can see
When I'm cleanin' windows
Honeymoonin' couples too
You should see them bill 'n coo
You'd be surprised at things they do
When I'm cleanin' windows
In my profession I'll work hard
But I'll never stop
I'll climb this blinkin' ladder
Till I get right to the top
The blushin' bride, she looks divine
The bridegroom he is doin' fine
I'd rather have his job than mine
When I'm cleanin' windows
The chambermaids' sweet names I call
It's a wonder I don't fall
My mind's not on my work at all
When I'm cleanin' windows
I know a fella, such a swell
He has a thirst, that's plain to tell
I've seen him drink his bath as well
When I'm cleanin' windows
Oh, in my profession I'll work hard
But I'll never stop
I'll climb this blinkin' ladder
Till I get right to the top
Pyjamas lyin' side by side
Ladies nighties I have spied
I've often seen what goes inside
When I'm cleanin' windows
------ banjo ------
Now there's a famous talkie queen
She looks a flapper on the screen
She's more like eightie than eighteen
When I'm cleanin' windows
She pulls her hair all down behind
Then pulls down her... never mind
And after that pulls down the blind
When I'm cleanin' windows
In my profession I'll work hard
But I'll never stop
I'll climb this blinkin' ladder
Till I get right to the top
An old maid walks around the floor
She's so fed up, one day I'm sure
She'll drag me in and lock the door
When I'm cleanin' windows
When I'm cleanin' windows

I like Eileen and Small World. I've only heard part of Small World - it is the introductory music of a television series called Early Doors. If it's the same song, I like it. Actually, Eileen is based on one of my early poems. Never had a penny in royalties for it, though. Wait until I see that Keven Rowland.

Nick Lowe- She's Got Soul
I´ve just met what could be
The making of me
She´s got soul
She´s got soul
Out of the blue, into my world
I´ve found a pearl
She´s got soul
She´s got soul
I´ve been lonely so long
I stopped hoping I´d ever find someone
So it just goes to show how wrong you can be
Did you hear what I said?
She´s got soul
I´ve just found a pearl
She´s got soul
She´s got soul
I´ve been lonely so long
I even stopped hoping I´d ever find someone
Did you hear what I said?
She´s got soul
I´ve just found a pearl
She´s got soul
She´s got soul
She´s got soul
I mean she´s really really got it going on
She´s got soul

Misty's Big Adventure (http://www.mistysbigadventure.co.uk/) - She fills the spaces in my mind
According to this write-up (http://www.bbc.co.uk/birmingham/music/2004/07/mistys_big_adventure/mistys.shtml) Misty's Big Adventure are "a nine-piece from band from Moseley in Birmingham. They feature a brass section, a DJ and a dancer who dresses in an outfit made from rubber gloves." This song is a bit Ska-y, but also quite parpy, and altogether a good thing to cheer you up on a cold morning going to work :)

Graham Parker- Mercury Poisoning
No more pretending now, the albatross is dying in its nest
The company is crippling me,
the worst trying to ruin the best, the best
Their promotion's so lame
They could never ever take it to the real ball game
Maybe they think I'm a pet
Well I've got all the diseases
I'm breaking out in sweat, you bet, because
I got, Mercury poisoning
It's fatal and it don't get better
I got, Mercury poisoning
The best kept secret in the we--est, hey the we--est
The boys and me are getting real well known around town
But every time we try to spread the action
Someone always brings it down, down
I ate the orange and I don't feel well
For them it's inconvenience for me it's hell
The geriatric staff think we're freaks
They couldn't sell kebabs to the Greeks, the geeks
Inaction speaks, and
I got, Mercury poisoning
It's fatal and it don't get better
I got, Mercury poisoning
The best kept secret in the we--est, hey the we--est
Is this a Russian conspiracy, no it's just idiocy
Is this a Chinese burn
I gotta dinosaur for a representative
It's got a small brain and refuses to learn
I got, Mercury poisoning
It's fatal and it don't get better
I got, Mercury poisoning
The best kept secret in the we--est, hey the we--est
Their promotion's so lame
They could never ever take it to the real ball game
Listen I ain't a pet
I aint a token hipster, in your monopoly set
You bet because
I got, Mercury poisoning
It's fatal and it don't get better
I got, Mercury poisoning
The best kept secret in the we--est, hey the we--est
Yeah the best kept secret in the west The best kept secret in the west

I've been singing this a lot lately:
Dee Carstensen - Take A Chance
I've been watching a familiar scene
The lives of two lovers with a haphazard dream
I've heard some promises
I would not hold them to
Their hearts beat a pattern to guide them through
And he says, "Don't beat down on me
Oh, you don't know what I can be
Just take a chance on me"
There's one more wash at the laundromat
There's a kid in her stroller
And an ache in her back
He might be the answer
A clock they deny
It slows down this moment
In the blink of an eye
When she says, "Hold this dream for me
Oh, your heart can set you free
Just take a chance on me"
Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance
Take a chance, take a chance
Take a chance, take a chance on me
If you think I'm just standing still
Somebody's telling you lies
Don't you burn like a needle
Down to the core
To get at what's aching inside
Can't breathe
Surely the thought has crossed her mind
That he'll get her nowhere
In one-half the time
Some vows are sacred
Some don't stand a chance
It's the heat of the moment
The rush of romance
When he says, "Girl, you'll always be
The bluest sky I'll ever see
Just take a chance on me"
Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance
Take a chance, take a chance
Take a chance, take a chance on me

I listen to way too much Moody Blues all year long and this time of year I listen to their Christmas album from a couple of years ago, "December." One of my favs from that, "Yes I Believe"....just a few lyrics....
"Yes, I believe in a better world, a world where my sisters can be free
And I have a place in my brother's heart, for everybody to see.
Yes, I believe in a better world
And like the rest of us, I pray
For peace on this earth and a better life
With every beautiful day
With every beautiful day."

Home for a Rest by Spirit of the West. It's been stuck in my head since I saw them play it last night, and I've been bouncing around singing it all day.
You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best!
I've been gone for a week, I've been drunk since I left!
These so-called vacations will soon be my death!
I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest!
