It was in my second year of college that I made the change. In late November, a few things started to make me think about what I was eating. First, I went to a really expensive wedding reception with my ex-girlfriend...at the dinner, we ate really rare steaks. She may have mentioned something about how she didn't really like eating those (even though she wasn't veggie) but all I remember is that I really felt guilty eating it. A few weeks later, I ran into a girl I knew from high school and found out she was vegetarian. She ended up discussing it with someone and I just listened. Six days later, I was in my dorm's cafeteria eating a turkey dish for lunch. I could barely finish it because I kept thinking about how it used to be alive. So, at dinner, I thought to myself, I'm going to see how long I can go without meat. So far it's been two years, two months, and 10 days.
It took me another 8-9 months to go vegan, which I did more gradually. I ended up seeing a list on the internet...I think it was '101 Reasons to Be Vegetarian' and I was shocked that the eggs and dairy industry were so terribly. So, I went vegan in late summer. I got really depressed right before that happened, but when I came back to school, I decided I needed to meet more vegans, so I joined the animal rights group on campus. I met a few and I felt a little less alone, and eventually I ran into the old VMB and realized that there actually are vegans out there, and I haven't felt alone in this since.
By the way, it's good to hear from all of you again! Peace,
Nick
