Fur Is Evil: A compassionate challenge to Google: please ban fur ads (http://furisevil.org/).

From Animal Person (http://www.animalperson.net/animal_person/2009/01/on-fur-is-evil-vs-google.html):

If you don't know how to connect Google, AdSense, Supervegan, Treehugger, Grist, China, Aretha Granklin, and the skin and fur of cats, dogs and other sentient beings, visit FurIsEvil (http://www.furisevil.org/). The site was launched recently, so you can get a feel for the entire story, with all of its tentacles, fairly quickly. You can also sign a petition (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/Google-Ban-Fur) to the Board of Directors of Google.

I was astounded when I learned how AdSense worked and then I was doubly astounded to learn how sites that are supposed to be vegan and/or environment-focused responded to the call to do something about the ads for fur that ended up on their sites (in a word: disappointing). It's fascinating how what appeared to be a great use of technology has a monumental flaw that actually results in promoting the opposite of what a site should stand for.

From Fur Is Evil (http://furisevil.org/):

We are fans of Google. We are also fans of the world's fur-bearing animals, and oppose the horrifically cruel and unnecessary fur industry which is increasingly abhorred by people all over the world.

Like many, we were surprised to learn that Google advertises for fur farms, wholesalers and retailers all over the world.

Making matters worse, fur ads continue to show up on AdSense publisher sites who are clearly opposed to fur, such as SuperVegan, Treehugger, Animal Planet and Planet Green). These sites are having great difficulty preventing the ads from continuing to appear.

Google's AdWords policy forbids the promotion of many categories of products, including anabolic steroids, tobacco, and miracle cures.

We are calling on Google to add fur to that list and thus lead the way to a less barbaric future.
