I became vegan because of a turtle. A friend of mine, who only recently became vegan herself, found a turtle that had been hit by a car during our lunch period. It was still alive and so she decided to try to nurse it back to health. It had a pretty serious shell injury and so she was trying to find a box to put it in so she could prop it up and keep it from crawling around too much. When she came into the classroom I was eating in, basically everyone in the class told her that it was just a stupid turtle, that she shouldn't care about it and one guy even offered to kill it himself. When they said that, I thought "man don't these people care for other living things?" and then I picked up a piece of pepperoni and put it to my mouth. At that moment, it all sort of hit me, what I was thinking and how that conflicted with what I was doing...and I made the decision that I would become vegan. I had looked into it in the past and always knew that I wasn't the kind of person who could be a vegetarian. Not to dog on that, but I am all in or nothing. So I made myself a "meat and dairy blow out", a final meal of sorts. Basically I bought and ate a pint of ben and jerry's and finished a ham and cheese p'zone from pizza hut I had in my fridge with milk. The next day I went vegan cold turkey. I tried to eat a cheese sandwhich, but I felt too bad. That was about 3 years ago. Since then, I haven't intentionally eaten anything non-vegan and I don't plan on it.
