I first began straying from the "SAD" diet when I stumbled upon the "Master Cleanser" by stanley burroughs. After feeling cleaner, sharper, and more in touch with my body it got me seeking out answers that weren't on the surface. Being a addictive web surfer I found more and more evidence of why a plant based lifestyle was adequate and why it could improve health.
Through networking I then stumbled upon Raw Foods through a local raw chef. I bought lots of raw books and decided to go 3 months raw (I would recommend 12-steps to raw by Victoria Boutenko). Then I went to a couple Raw Food Potlucks in my area and it really peaked my curiousity. How would it make me feel?
Wow does the psychology of food addiction really have a hold of us. It wasn't until doing this that I really started to understand the emotional sides of eating. At the same time I grew a passion for real quality organic produce that I will carry forever. I really appreciate healthy foods more and I love how they make me feel! So I fell off the raw wagon for lack of support and then about a year later my girlfriend had the idea we should try it. We did 3 months together and then came off. We became burned out on preparing everything for ourselves and all the work and stress of other parts of our life. Had there been raw food dishes in restaraunts I think we could have maintained. Towards the last couple of weeks though I did notice that I was becoming more satisfied and fine with the idea of eating simpler raw foods. (ie, just eating sliced apples for a meal, or a handful of nuts and raisins).
If I can get used to the 5 minute or less food prep I think I could finally stay Raw for a longer period. I know that raw the ideal way for the body to assimilate food, and provides for a more efficient immune/cleansing system. I look forward to this summer when the produce is out and I can try again!
